Buying a Mobile Phone - The Options

There are a number of ways that you can obtain a Mobile Phone;

Free or Reduced price - The expensive Phone Handset is either free or reduced in price as your monthly line rental and inclusive call charges subsidise the purchase of the Phone.

Pay as you go (PAYG) - You pay for the Mobile Phone handset but you only pay for the calls that you make and not a monthly fee. The call charges generally are more expensive than those on a monthly contract, but this is a good option for infrequent users of their phone or those that need to restrict their call usage. However, some PAYG mobiles have expiry times on top up vouchers, c4rlh recommends choosing a PAYG phone without such limitations as this will increase ownership costs.

Sim Free Mobiles - These phones are not subsidised at all as they allow you to choose your own Network operator, Sim Card and Price plan yourself. Due to this they are much more expensive to purchase than the other options. However, they are not locked down to a specific operator and allow you flexibility.

Pre Pay Mobile Phones - These are excellent phones to buy someone else as a present as you do not usually need to sign any contracts on purchase, you buy a package containing the handset, a network sim card and a fixed term amount of line rental (which usually has inclusive calls).
