Mobile Phone Safety - Protect your Mobile

Mobile Phone Crime - Every year in the UK hundreds of thousands of phones are stolen. It sounds unbelievable, but it's true: in 2000/1, the estimated number of mobile phone thefts was 710,000. Over the same period, 28% of all robberies involved a mobile phone. These are disturbing statistics.

Tips to prevent Mobile Phone Theft
  • Only use your Mobile Phone in areas where there are other people. Avoid taking secluded short cuts.


  • Be prepared, don’t think it can’t happen to me, Have your own personal safety plan.


  • It doesn’t pay to advertise. Keep your Mobile Phone out of sight.


  • Leave an area if you feel unsafe. Trust your instincts.


  • Extra vigilance can produce results. You are less likely to become a victim if you are aware of your surroundings.


  • Phones have a unique IMEI number, key in *#06# to find yours, record it, and keep it safe.


  • Have a PIN number that is unique to you, change it when you first get the phone.


  • Only unlock the phone when you need to use it.


  • Never buy a phone unless you know the seller is the owner, can they produce the original packaging or a receipt?


    • If someone asks to use your phone claiming an emergency situation then ask them the number they want dialling and the message to give. Phone the number and relay the message yourself unless you are confident that there is no chance of the person running off or refusing to give your phone back.

    Every time you finish using the phone lock the keys, this helps reduce accidental 999 calls.

    Record details of your electronic serial number (ESN) and consider separate insurance

    Most phones have an IMEI number which is a unique identifier for the phone; you can obtain this number by typing *#06# (star hash 06 hash) into your mobile phone and it will display a 15 digit number

    Property mark your phone with your postcode and door number to help police identify stolen ones

    Report a lost or stolen phone to the police immediately

    Inform your service provider if your phone is stolen or lost.
