Smilies -
A Smiley (also known as text emoticons) is used to represent emotions in text messagages, forums, e-mails and newsgroup postings in an attempt to overcome the textual impersonality of the Internet. In particular, smilies are most often used to signal the use of humour and irony, which can be lost in online communication. The most common smilie is comprised of a colon, a hyphen and a closing bracket :-) which is used to signal humour or happiness (as it looks like a smiling face when you tilt your head to the left).

You can now insert text smileys at will in your messenger, text message, email or forum. Even better, you should now understand what smilies people are sending you! A smiley a day keeps extra words at bay.
